Most standardised tests reward what you know. Students who treat LSAT prep as a knowledge problem read explanations passively, feel like they understand, and then miss the same question type three weeks later. The Three LSAT Sections: What Each One Actually Tests
The LSAT has three scored sections.
Logical Reasoning (LR) makes up roughly half your score and presents ~50 short arguments across two sections. Why Re-Reading Explanations Is the Worst Way to Improve Your LSAT Score
Dunlosky et al. (2013) reviewed ten study techniques across dozens of studies and found that re-reading and highlighting ranked lowest in utility. The reason is straightforward: re-reading builds familiarity, not performance. You recognise the explanation as making sense because you're reading it in a low-stakes, low-pressure environment. That recognition doesn't transfer to the timed, novel conditions of the actual exam.

Logical Reasoning: The 13-Question-Type Framework
LR is the highest-leverage section on the LSAT because it accounts for roughly half your score and is almost entirely learnable through question-type pattern recognition. The ~13 question types each have a distinct task, a distinct stimulus structure to look for, and a distinct set of wrong-answer traps.
The types include: Assumption (Necessary and Sufficient), Strengthen, Weaken, Flaw, Inference, Must Be True, Main Point, Method of Reasoning, Role of a Statement, Paradox, Parallel Reasoning, Principle (Apply and Identify), and Point at Issue.
Each type demands a different cognitive move. A Strengthen question asks you to find the answer that makes the conclusion more likely to follow from the premises. A Flaw question asks you to identify the logical error the argument commits. Treating these the same way — reading the argument and picking the "best" answer — is why most students plateau below 160.
Kornell & Bjork (2008) showed that interleaved practice (mixing question types within a session) produces better long-term pattern discrimination than blocked practice (drilling one type exhaustively before moving to the next). The exam mixes question types freely; your practice should too.

Reading Comprehension: The Active Annotation Method
LSAT Reading Comprehension doesn't test whether you understood the passage. It tests whether you mapped the argument — the author's main claim, the structure of the evidence, the relationship between multiple viewpoints, and the purpose of each paragraph.
