Most students walk into a geography exam having revised only one half of the course. Master the Physical Geography Core
The single biggest mistake in physical geography revision: treating case studies as the content. They're not. The case study is the evidence. The mechanism is the content.
For every physical geography topic — plate tectonics, river systems, weather patterns, glaciation — start by building the mechanism from scratch. Why does a river meander? Because velocity differences between the inner and outer bank cause differential erosion and deposition. Once you understand the mechanism, the Holderness Coast or the Yangtze floods become examples of that mechanism, not isolated facts to memorise.
Mind mapping works well here. Draw the process (e.g. the water cycle or the rock cycle) as a flow diagram, then annotate with case study examples at each stage. You're building a framework, not a list.
Willingham (2009) showed that students who understand underlying principles can transfer knowledge to new contexts — students who only memorise facts cannot. In geography, this shows up directly: a student who understands the mechanism behind a storm surge can answer a question about any coastal flooding event, even one they've never seen before.
Build Your Case Study Bank the Right Way
Case studies are where human geography lives — urbanisation patterns, migration flows, economic development, resource management. The danger is treating each case study as a standalone block of facts. That produces revision that's fragile: it only works if the exam question matches the exact framing you revised.
The fix is the PEEL framework: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link.
- Point — state what you're arguing
- Evidence — name the case study, give a specific statistic or example
- Explain — describe the mechanism or process behind it
- Link — connect it back to the question or to a broader pattern
PEEL forces you to use case studies as evidence for a mechanism, not as standalone descriptions. That makes them transferable. An answer built around PEEL can flex to fit an unfamiliar question because the underlying logic — not the surface facts — is doing the work.

Tackle Data, Maps, and Graphs Actively
Data questions are the most consistent mark-dropper in geography. Students see an unfamiliar graph or map and either describe it vaguely or skip the analysis layer entirely.
Use the three-step framework: describe → analyse → evaluate.
- Describe — identify the overall pattern, the peak, the anomaly. Be specific: use figures from the graph.
- Analyse — explain why the pattern exists. Apply your physical or human geography knowledge.
- Evaluate — assess the reliability of the data, the limitations of the source, or the significance of the pattern.
The critical word here is unfamiliar. Don't only practise with graphs and maps from your own class. Active recall applied to data means finding graphs you've never seen before — from past papers, other exam boards, or geography journals — and working through the three-step framework every week.

Geography has a dense vocabulary layer — erosion types, demographic transition model stages, Hjulström curve thresholds, types of plate boundary. These terms need to be automatic before exam day, because you can't spend working memory retrieving definitions when you're trying to construct an evaluated argument.
