The Cornell Note-Taking Method: The Complete Guide for Students

How to Take Cornell Notes in a Lecture: 5 Steps

Step 1: Set up your page before class. Draw a vertical line about 2.5 inches from the left edge. Draw a horizontal line about 2 inches from the bottom. Label the left column "Cues," the right column "Notes," and the bottom section "Summary." This takes thirty seconds and saves confusion during the lecture.

Step 2: Take notes in the right column during class. Use bullet points, abbreviations, and your own shorthand. Don't try to transcribe the lecture word for word — you'll fall behind and end up with useless verbatim text. Step 3: Fill in the cue column within 24 hours. This step is critical and most students skip it. Step 4: Write your summary at the bottom of each page. In 2–3 sentences, summarise the main point of that page. Pretend you're explaining it to a friend who missed the lecture. If you can't do this without looking at the notes, that's useful information — it tells you exactly where the gaps are.

Step 5: Review within 24 hours, then again before the exam. The first review is where the system pays off. Cover the notes column, look only at the cue column, and try to answer each question out loud or in writing. Check yourself. Flag anything that stumped you. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even students who use the Cornell note-taking method often undermine it with a few consistent habits:

  • Skipping the summary box. It feels optional. It isn't. The summary forces synthesis, and synthesis is where understanding is built.
